as of a few days ago, GitHub is no longer independent from Microsoft. to add insult to injury, the website was merged into the AI division.

anyone who knows me well enough knows i have a strong distaste for anything AI. i think it produces worse code (for which you don’t understand the full vertical integration of) and also is scientifically proven to cause cognitive atrophy. naturally, i am extremely upset about this development.

my solution, of course, is to self-host my own git website using forgejo.

people can (and have!) argue the following:

  1. Microsoft already trained their AI on your code! Leaving means nothing!
  2. Your projects won’t be discoverable if they’re on a small personal instance!
  3. I can’t star your projects if they’re on an instance I can’t even register to!

… to which i answer:

  1. sure, but inaction and complacency is still worse. i would rather do something than sit and grow fat and happy.
  2. i don’t care much for my projects becoming popular. to me, it’s a portfolio, not a social media.
  3. if you like a project of mine and want to actually support me feel free to toss me $2. also, links still work.

so far i’ve moved a majority of my primary projects to my forgejo instance and i plan to have any new projects begin there. if you like my projects, feel free to send me an email complimenting me, share them around, or donate to my ko-fi.
